Gum disease is all too common among adults in society today, caused primarily by plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. In its early stage of gingivitis, this condition can be treated fairly easily. Once it advances to periodontal disease, treatment is more complicated, depending on the severity of your condition. At Inspiration Dental in Riverview, Florida, Dr. Janis Milne and our team offer non-surgical periodontal therapy in the form of scaling and root planing. The answers to the following questions provide more information about this gum disease treatment.
Scaling and root planing is, in essence, deep cleaning of your teeth. These two procedures rid your mouth of plaque and tartar buildup above and below the gumline to minimize the symptoms of gum disease. Scaling is the process where a dental specialist scrapes plaque and tartar off your teeth using special dental tools. Root planing is the process of smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth to make it more difficult for bacteria and plaque to gather there again.
Deep cleaning is generally recommended when plaque and tartar have accumulated under the gumline of your teeth. At this time, we may also detect signs of gum disease, such as inflammation, bleeding gums, or receding gums. Scaling and root planing reach under the gumline to eliminate bacterial pockets that cause your gums to pull away from your teeth. Cleansing your gums of harmful bacteria gives them a chance to heal.
As deep cleaning can be painful, we’ll numb your mouth before proceeding with your treatment. That way, you’ll feel more relaxed and comfortable during your procedure. Any sensitivity or pain you experience after your procedure can be relieved with OTC pain medication. It’s best to avoid crunchy or acidic foods during your recovery as these foods can interfere with your healing. You may find it easier to eat soft foods for several days after your treatment.
Dr. Milne may recommend more frequent dental visits so we can monitor your condition. Depending on the severity of your condition, the deep cleaning process may need to be repeated quarterly until your gum infection is under control.
After deep cleaning, your gums will look and feel healthier as the bacteria buildup has been removed. There will be less gum inflammation, sensitivity, and bleeding – common symptoms of periodontal disease. Over time, your gums will start to return to their normal state. Deep cleaning won’t remedy any bone loss you’ve suffered due to periodontal disease, but it can keep future bone loss from occurring to reduce your risk of losing permanent teeth.
