Computer-Aided One-Day Crowns

For the last few decades, when patients were told they needed to have a crown installed, the first response was a bit of surprise. Then it was the realization that the process would take weeks to complete from beginning to end. As the patient learned the details, the first visit would involve the removal of the bad tooth material and the installation of a temporary crown. Then, a bit later, the permanent crown would be installed, usually, after the crown is created and finished.

Interestingly, modern technology has now made it possible for new crown patients to avoid that entire traditional process and instead get a crown completed in one day. How is this possible? It’s a process that borrows from computer-aided design.

How CEREC Crown Fabrication Works

The process works similarly to how traditional crowns are developed. The initial step begins with the dentist’s evaluation of the patient and the mapping of the tooth to be replaced with a crown. This is done through high-technology imaging that literally creates software replicating the tooth in three-dimensional specifications. Once mapped, the specifications then become the model on which a replacement crown is fabricated. A system now referred to is CEREC. The model is sent to a milling machine that creates the tooth crown. Once finished, the dentist takes the crown and installs it over the patient’s tooth, skipping the temporary crown step and going straight to the replacement tooth.

Again, traditional crowns are a much longer process involving at least two visits that go like this:

  • The first visit is a series of x-rays, confirmation with a physical evaluation by the dentist of the tooth, and an impression of the tooth is made and used as a mold.
  • Then preliminary removal of decayed tooth material and cleaning is applied to prepare the tooth that will be capped, which is then protected with a temporary crown.
  • On the second visit, a permanent crown is bonded two or three weeks later.

A Marketing Disruptor in Play

CEREC dental technology is producing a completely new paradigm in providing replacement crowns for patients. The simple advantage of time convenience makes the CEREC approach far more attractive and reduces the discomfort for the patient that often comes with multiple visits. Instead, the new crown process goes like this: the tooth to be crowned is mapped, fabricated, and fitted within one visit, something most people can manage far better than multiple visits. Additionally, it reduces the risk of damage to the treated tooth, removing the time window it takes for a temporary crown to be needed, which could fail or become infected.
